PLANTS FOR SPRING 2017

Murraya koenigii/Curry Leaf

Every Indian household could use a curry leaf plant.  Plant it in a pot or in the ground.  If left in the ground it will most likely lose its leaves in the winter but it will come back in the spring.  Just protect it in the event of extreme frost.  Plant will be ~8 months old and ~6" tall and full.

Tulsi / Holy Basil

I will grow both green and red(Krishna Tulsi) basil.  This will need to be brought indoors in the winter.  Plants will have woody stems when given.  Anyone interested in a larger tulsi pot @ ~$30-40?  We can try to get some shipped from india if there is interest... email me.

Nyctanthes arbor-tristis/ Parijat

This is a new plant for me.  I have a year old plant and have ~100 smaller ones.  This plant is very hard to find-- even online.  I think it will require being brought indoors during the winter, but I need to do more research.  Some people use it in pooja.  Also called indian night jasmine.

Jasminum tortuosum

This is a variety of jasmine that I have not seen in stores here.  It grows very well outside and is very hardy.  I grow it in the ground and, judging from its size, it likes it:)  It has almost continual flowers which I guess is one reason it is used in pooja.  I will have sample flowers at the sale.  Plant will be a rooted cutting, actively growing.

Moringa Oliefera / drumstick

As you know, you can eat almost any part of this tree.  This is a fast growing tree, but not well structured.  I don't have a ton of experience growing this in the bay area.  I am pretty sure you will have to grow it in a pot or protect it during the winter if left outdoors.  You can surely eat the leaves, but I am not sure if it will 'fruit'.

Crossandra infundibuliformis

This is a flower used in hair decorations by indian women.  Growing this is on hold until I fix my space problem:)

Stefanotis Floribunda

I grew this last year and people liked it so I will grow more of this.  Also called Madagascar Wedding flower.  It is a vine with waxy deep green leaves and clusters of nicely scented white flowers.  Update picture please.

Betel Leaf

This is the piper betel plant, whose leaves are used to make pan.  This is a new plants for this year so quantities will be limitted.

Neem (Azadirachta indica)

Tree with medicinal uses.  Natural insecticide.

Indian Pennywort(Centella asiatica)

This is a medicinal herb that some might recognize.  It is vallaarai in Tamil, and gotu kola in Sinahalese.  It grows easily and you eat the leaves.

Jasminum Nitidum

This is a very nice variety of jasmine with large flowers with long petals.  The flowers can be almost 2" across.

Bael (Aegle marmelos)

This is a sacred tree to many Hindus, used in the worship of Shiva.  Also called bilva.
